Been thinking about an e-bike? We have a great selection of electric bikes at our bike store in Mt. Kisco. If you aren’t familiar with the concept of an E bike, just think of it as a regular bike with the addition of a motor, battery, and controller. E bikes, or electric bikes, provide fast and flexible transportation. The electric part is simply included to augment your own human power with a power assist component. Charging is as simple as plugging your bike into an electrical outlet. The better the battery, the faster the charge. A high-quality battery will charge in 2-4 hours with a lifespan of 700 to 1,000 charges. Cheaper batteries can take double or triple that time and last for only 300 to 700 charges.

From a motor perspective, electric bikes come with three types … front hub, rear hub and mid-drive. The motor has an electrical component that can give you 20 to 100 miles on a single charge. Just how far that charge lasts will depend on your riding style. You have the option of riding using only the pedal, using pedal-assist or going full electric. Most of the electric bikes we sell are equipped with Bosch batteries, as we’ve found them to be the most reliable.

Electric bikes come in many styles: road, hybrid, mountain, and commuting.  Road e-bikes, like the Trek Domane + look sleek while offering speeds up to 28 mph and a range of up to 70 miles on one charge. Hybrid electric bikes are super practical for recreational riding. The Trek Verve + is a perfect choice and is offered in men’s and women’s models. For the serious commuter, we suggest a bike like the Allant + 8, which might make you want to sell your car and save on gas and parking! We have a few customers who commute to work exclusively on an electric bike and love leaving their car parked in the driveway all week.  Finally, if riding in the woods is your thing, then a bike like the Powerfly LT 9.7 is something to consider. Electric bikes can be a great equalizer if skill and fitness levels vary widely between riders. We have several customers who are more recreational riders but want to be able to keep up with their friends or family members who may be more advanced. With an e-bike, everyone can share in the fun together! Electric bikes are offered on many bicycle touring trips for exactly this reason.

8 Reasons to Buy an Electric Bike

  1. Go greater distances faster and with less effort
  2. You’ll be more likely to ride an e bike than regular bike
  3. Because you’ll ride more, you stay fit
  4. They cost less than other modes of transportation
  5. You’ll make commuting easier
  6. Climbing hills is a whole lot easier
  7. Riding through a stiff wind is much easier
  8. You’ll have a lot of fun riding

Pedal Assist
The pedal assist option is activated when you begin pedaling your electric bicycle. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist e-bike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip up hills and cruise over tough terrain without gassing yourself.

You can also control how big of an assist you get. Most electric bikes come with a power switch that lets you adjust the boost setting from “eco” (low) to “turbo” (high), for when you want a little more oomph to help you up a steep hill.

See for Yourself
E bikes are great for commuters, recreational cyclists, or people who may want to replace driving their car every day to run errands. Curious? Stop by to test ride some electric bicycle today at our bike store in Westchester County!
